The orchid is one of the fundamentals subject learned by the beginning ink painting student. Long, free arm motions are done for the leaves, while more controlled movements are needed for the flower and its center. The orchid is one of the “Four Gentlemen” in the Chinese and Japanese ink painting tradition. Each “gentleman” has associated virtues and seasons. While the orchid is easily learned, it is very difficult to create a well constructed, expressive and artistic painting.

My brother bought me paper and japanese ink brushes when he went on a trip because he knew I’d be interested in it. What type of ink should I use? And what type of paper is okay?

I would use rice paper. That has worked best for me. What you need to get are ink stones. This method of painting is very much like water color. The ink stones produce the most beautiful media to work with. You can achieve any color or intensity by how much water is on your brush. Look on line for the ink stones. some can be pricey, but they last forever.. Best of luck to you and I hope that you have as much fun as I have with this particular method of painting.
